Why Copying Notes Is Not Studying
It feels like studying. You sit at your desk, open your textbook, and carefully copy information into a notebook. The page fills up. Your hand gets tired. Hours pass. You feel accomplished because you have a stack of neatly written notes to show for your effort.
But when the exam arrives, you cannot recall half of what you copied. The material feels vaguely familiar - you know you have seen it before - but you cannot explain it, apply it, or answer specific questions about it. Something went wrong, and the problem is fundamental: copying notes is not studying.
The Illusion of Productivity
Copying notes is one of the most common study habits among students, and it is also one of the least effective. The reason it persists is that it feels productive. You are doing something. You are engaged with the material. You have tangible output. All of these signals tell your brain that learning is happening.
Psychologists call this an illusion of competence. Research by Karpicke and Blunt (2011) demonstrated that activities producing a feeling of fluency - like rereading and copying - create confidence without corresponding knowledge. Students who reread or transcribed material predicted higher test performance than students who used retrieval practice, but actually performed worse.
The core problem is that copying engages your visual and motor systems but largely bypasses the cognitive processing needed to build understanding and durable memory.
What Actually Happens When You Copy
When you copy from a textbook or lecture slides to your notebook, your brain performs a fairly simple operation: read a phrase, hold it in short-term memory for a few seconds, write it down, repeat. This is what psychologists call shallow processing. You are encoding the surface features of the information - the words, the sequence - without engaging with what they mean.
Craik and Lockhart's Levels of Processing framework (1972) established that memory depends on the depth at which information is processed. Shallow processing (focusing on appearance or sound) produces weak, quickly forgotten memories. Deep processing (focusing on meaning, connections, and implications) produces strong, durable memories.
Copying operates almost entirely at the shallow level. You can copy an entire chapter without ever asking yourself what it means, why it matters, or how it connects to other things you know.
The Handwriting Exception - Sort Of
You may have heard that handwriting notes is better than typing them. Research by Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014) did find that students who took handwritten notes during lectures performed better on conceptual questions than students who typed. But the reason was not the physical act of writing - it was that handwriting is slower, which forced students to summarize and paraphrase rather than transcribing verbatim.
This distinction matters. If you handwrite your notes but copy word-for-word from the source, you do not get the benefit. The advantage comes from the mental processing involved in selecting, condensing, and rephrasing - not from the ink on paper.
Copying is copying regardless of whether you use a pen or a keyboard. The medium is irrelevant if the cognitive processing is absent.
Why It Feels So Good Anyway
Several psychological factors make copying feel effective:
Fluency bias. When you reread material you just copied, it feels familiar. Familiarity creates a sense of knowing, even when actual recall ability is low. You mistake recognition for retrieval capability.
Effort justification. You spent two hours copying notes. Your brain wants that effort to have been worthwhile, so it interprets the time investment as evidence of learning. This is a form of cognitive dissonance reduction.
Tangible output. A full notebook feels like progress. Unlike invisible mental processes like understanding and integration, copied notes are something you can hold, count, and show to others.
Anxiety reduction. Copying is a low-risk activity. It does not confront you with what you do not know. Unlike self-testing, which exposes gaps and feels uncomfortable, copying lets you interact with material without ever failing. This comfort is precisely why it does not produce learning.
What to Do Instead
The study strategies that actually build durable knowledge share a common feature: they require you to think about the material, not just look at it. Here are replacements for note-copying that use the same time more effectively.
1. Close the Book and Write From Memory
Instead of copying notes with the source open, read a section, close the book, and write down everything you can remember. Then open the book and check what you missed. This is retrieval practice, and it is one of the most effective study techniques ever documented.
Roediger and Karpicke (2006) showed that students who practiced retrieval retained significantly more material over time than students who used repeated study. The act of pulling information from memory strengthens the memory itself.
2. Summarize in Your Own Words
If you want to write while studying, summarize rather than copy. Read a full section, then write a brief summary using your own language. This forces comprehension because you cannot paraphrase something you do not understand. Your summary should be shorter than the original - ideally one-quarter to one-third the length.
If you find yourself writing the same words as the textbook, you are copying, not summarizing. Make yourself use different sentence structures and vocabulary.
3. Create Questions Instead of Copying Answers
Transform the material into questions. Instead of copying "The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell," write "What is the function of the mitochondria?" Then, in a later study session, answer your own questions without looking at the source.
This approach converts passive content into active assessment material. You study the material once when creating the questions and again - more effectively - when answering them later.
4. Build Concept Maps
Instead of linear copied notes, create visual maps showing how concepts relate to each other. Put a central topic in the middle and draw connections to related ideas, causes, effects, and examples. This forces you to think about relationships between concepts rather than treating each fact as an isolated piece of information.
5. Use the Feynman Technique
Named after physicist Richard Feynman, this technique involves explaining a concept in simple language as if teaching it to someone who knows nothing about the topic. When you hit a point where your explanation breaks down, you have found a gap in your understanding. Go back to the source, study that specific gap, and try explaining again.
This process exposes the difference between knowing words and understanding concepts - a difference that copying completely obscures.
6. Apply the Material
Work through practice problems, case studies, or application exercises. Apply the concepts you are studying to new scenarios. This is the most direct way to build the kind of knowledge that exams test. An exam does not ask you to reproduce your notes - it asks you to use what you know.
The Transition Can Feel Uncomfortable
If you are used to copying notes, switching to active strategies will feel strange at first. You will produce less visible output. Your notes will be messier. You will spend less time writing and more time thinking, which can feel like you are not doing enough.
You may also discover gaps in your knowledge that copying conveniently hid. Self-testing reveals what you actually know versus what you merely recognize. This can be unsettling, but it is the beginning of real learning.
Trust the discomfort. The students who learn the most are not the ones with the neatest notebooks. They are the ones who regularly confront what they do not know and do the mental work to close those gaps.
A Simple Test
Here is how to tell whether your study method is working: after a session, close all your materials and try to write down or explain the key concepts from memory. If you can, your method is building real knowledge. If you cannot - if the information was "right there" while you were copying but has already faded - then you were transcribing, not learning.
