# How to Use Pre-Testing to Accelerate Learning

Here is a counterintuitive study strategy: take a test on material you have not studied yet. You will get most of the answers wrong. And that is exactly the point.

The pretesting effect is a well-documented phenomenon in cognitive science showing that attempting to answer questions before you have learned the material significantly improves your ability to learn and retain that material when you encounter it later. Getting the wrong answer, it turns out, primes your brain to absorb the right one.

What the Research Shows

The foundational research on pretesting comes from work by Richland, Kornell, and Kao published in 2009 in the Journal of Experimental Psychology. They had participants attempt to answer questions about passages before reading them. Compared to a control group that simply read the passages with the same amount of study time, the pretesting group showed significantly better retention on a later test - even though their initial pre-test answers were mostly wrong.

This finding has been replicated extensively. Kornell, Hays, and Bjork published further studies in 2009 confirming that even unsuccessful retrieval attempts enhance subsequent learning. The key finding was that the act of searching for an answer - even when the search fails - changes how the brain processes the correct information when it appears.

Importantly, the benefit persists even when learners are confident in their wrong answers. The pretesting effect is not about getting lucky guesses right. It is about the cognitive process of attempting retrieval before the information is available.

Why Getting It Wrong Helps You Get It Right

Several mechanisms explain why pretesting works:

Activated Search Primes Encoding

When you attempt to answer a question about unfamiliar material, your brain activates related knowledge and begins searching for connections. This search process - even when it fails to find the right answer - creates a network of activated associations. When you then encounter the correct information, it slots into this pre-activated network more easily and is encoded more deeply.

Think of it like preparing soil before planting. The pre-test loosens the cognitive ground so that the information you plant afterward takes root more effectively.

Curiosity and Attention

Getting a question wrong creates a knowledge gap - you now know that you do not know something specific. Research on curiosity by Gruber and colleagues in 2014 found that curiosity states enhance memory formation. When you are curious about an answer, your brain pays more attention to the relevant information when it appears.

Pre-testing generates targeted curiosity. Instead of a vague sense that you should learn about a topic, you have specific questions you want answered. This directs your attention during subsequent studying, making you a more efficient learner.

Error Correction Is Powerful

The brain encodes error corrections particularly well. When you predict an answer, discover you were wrong, and then learn the correct answer, the contrast between your expectation and reality creates a strong memory signal. This is related to what neuroscientists call prediction error - a surprise signal that the brain treats as important information worth remembering.

Research by Metcalfe published in 2017 confirmed that high-confidence errors - cases where you were sure you were right but were wrong - actually produce the best learning after correction. The surprise of being wrong amplifies the encoding of the correct information.

How to Use Pre-Testing in Practice

Before Reading a New Chapter

Before you read a chapter in a textbook, look at the chapter summary, review questions, or learning objectives. Try to answer them. Write down your best guesses, even if they are completely uninformed. Then read the chapter. You will find that the information relevant to those questions stands out and sticks better than it would have otherwise.

Before a Lecture

If you know the topic of an upcoming lecture, spend five minutes writing down everything you think you know about it, along with questions you expect the lecture might answer. Your predictions will often be wrong, and that is fine. The act of generating expectations primes you to notice when the lecturer confirms or contradicts them.

Using Practice Exams as Pre-Tests

Many students save practice exams for the end of their study period as a final check. This is useful but not optimal. Consider taking a practice exam at the beginning of your study period, before you have reviewed the material. Score yourself honestly, note which areas you got wrong, and then use those results to guide your studying.

The pre-test serves a dual purpose: it creates the pretesting effect for better encoding, and it identifies your weak areas so you can allocate your study time more effectively.

Creating Pre-Test Questions From Headings

A quick method for any material: scan the headings and subheadings of what you are about to study and convert each one into a question. "The Role of Mitochondria in Cellular Respiration" becomes "What role do mitochondria play in cellular respiration?" Attempt an answer, then read the section. This takes only a few extra minutes but significantly improves retention.

Pre-Testing vs. Pre-Reading

Some students use pre-reading - skimming material before studying it in depth - as a study strategy. Pre-testing is different and, according to the research, more effective.

Pre-reading is passive. You scan headings, skim paragraphs, and get a general sense of the structure. It provides some benefit by activating prior knowledge, but it does not generate the effortful search process that makes pretesting so effective.

Pre-testing is active. You are not just encountering information - you are attempting to produce it. That attempt, even when it fails, creates the cognitive conditions for superior learning. If you have limited time, pre-testing gives you more benefit per minute than pre-reading.

Addressing the Objection: "But I Will Learn Wrong Information"

A reasonable concern about pre-testing is that you might encode your wrong answers and have difficulty overriding them later. The research addresses this directly.

Butler and Roediger, in their 2008 study, found that when pre-test errors are followed by corrective feedback - which normal studying provides - the errors do not persist. The correct information effectively overwrites the incorrect guess. In fact, the contrast between the wrong guess and the right answer makes the correct information more memorable, not less.

The critical factor is that you must actually study the correct material after pre-testing. Pre-testing without follow-up study could reinforce errors. But as a first step before studying, it is consistently beneficial.

Combining Pre-Testing With Other Techniques

Pre-testing works well in combination with other evidence-based study methods:

Pre-testing plus spaced repetition. Take a pre-test on Day 1, study the material, then use spaced repetition to review over the following days and weeks. The pre-test primes the initial encoding; spaced repetition maintains it.

Pre-testing plus elaborative interrogation. After pre-testing and studying, ask yourself "why" and "how" questions about the material. The pre-test creates curiosity; elaborative interrogation deepens understanding.

Pre-testing plus practice testing. Pre-test before studying, then post-test after studying. This gives you retrieval practice at both ends of the learning process - one for priming, one for consolidation.

Making It a Habit

The simplest way to incorporate pre-testing is to make it the first step of every study session. Before opening your notes, spend two to five minutes writing down what you already know - or think you know - about the topic you are about to study. Then list three to five specific questions you want to answer.

This takes minimal time but shifts your entire study session from passive absorption to active, directed learning. Your brain arrives at the material ready to encode it deeply because it has already tried - and failed - to retrieve it.

The research is clear: struggling to answer questions before you know the answers is not wasted effort. It is one of the most efficient ways to prepare your brain for learning.
