Active Recall (Practice Testing)
Instead of reading your notes, close them and try to write down everything you remember about a topic. Use flashcards and genuinely attempt to produce the answer before flipping the card. Work through practice questions without looking at reference materials.

Spaced Practice

Instead of studying one topic exhaustively before moving to the next, alternate between different topics or problem types within a single session. This feels harder and less comfortable than blocked practice, but it produces better discrimination between concepts and stronger long-term retention.
How to Break the Rereading Habit
Switching from rereading to active strategies requires overcoming the discomfort of effortful learning. Here are concrete steps:
- Accept that effective studying feels harder. If your study session feels easy and comfortable, you are probably not learning much. Difficulty is not a sign of failure - it is a sign of learning.
- Replace one reread with one retrieval attempt. Instead of reading your notes twice, read them once, then close them and write down what you remember. Compare your recall with the original. This single change will dramatically improve your retention.
- Use flashcards with honest self-assessment. Create cards that require you to produce answers, not just recognize them. Be strict about marking cards correct - if you could not produce the full answer before checking, mark it wrong.
- Track your actual performance. When you rely on rereading, you have no objective measure of what you know. Active recall gives you immediate, honest feedback. Track how many cards you get right, how your scores change over time, and which topics consistently give you trouble.
- Start small. You do not need to overhaul your entire study routine overnight. Replace 15 minutes of rereading with 15 minutes of retrieval practice. Once you experience the difference, expanding from there becomes natural.
The Uncomfortable Truth
Rereading persists because it is comfortable, familiar, and produces an immediate (if false) sense of accomplishment. Abandoning it means accepting short-term discomfort in exchange for dramatically better results. Every minute you spend rereading is a minute you could spend on a strategy that actually builds lasting knowledge.
