Consider what happens when you write your own study question. You have to:

  1. Identify the key concept - deciding what is important enough to test yourself on.
  2. Determine the best angle - figuring out how to ask about it in a way that tests real understanding.
  3. Anticipate wrong answers - thinking about common misconceptions and distinguishing them from the correct answer.
  4. Formulate the question clearly - translating your understanding into precise language.

Each of these steps involves deep engagement with the material. By the time you have written the question, you have already studied the concept from multiple angles - before you ever use the question to test yourself.

How to Harness the Generation Effect

Write Your Own Questions After Each Study Session

After reading a chapter or reviewing a topic, close the book and write 5-10 questions from memory. Do not look at the material while writing them. This forces you to recall what you just studied (retrieval practice) and then restructure it into question form (generation).

Your questions do not need to be polished or comprehensive. The learning benefit comes from the generation process itself, not from producing a perfect question bank.

Summarize Before You Review

Before consulting your notes or textbook, try to summarize what you know about a topic in your own words. Write it out or say it aloud. This is a form of generation - you are producing content from memory rather than consuming it from a source.

After your self-generated summary, check it against the source material. The gaps between what you produced and what was actually in the material are your most valuable study targets.

Explain Concepts in Your Own Words

When you encounter a definition, do not copy it verbatim into your notes. Close the source and write the definition in your own language. Your version does not need to be as precise or complete as the textbook's - the act of generating your own wording is what matters.

This is sometimes called the "Feynman Technique" - explain the concept as if teaching it to someone who knows nothing about the field. Where your explanation breaks down or becomes vague, that is where your understanding needs work.

Build Your Own Examples

Textbooks provide examples to illustrate concepts. These examples are useful, but generating your own is more effective for learning. After studying a principle, come up with a new example that was not in the source material. Bonus points if you can create an example from your own experience or professional context.

Creating examples requires you to understand the concept well enough to recognize it in a novel situation, which is a higher level of learning than recognizing it in the textbook's familiar example.

Combining Generation With Pre-Made Materials

This is not an either-or choice. The most effective study approach often combines pre-made materials with self-generated ones. Use high-quality question banks and study resources for their comprehensiveness and structure, but supplement them with your own generated questions, summaries, and explanations.

A practical approach: use pre-made materials for your first pass through a topic to get the broad picture, then generate your own materials during review to deepen and strengthen your understanding. The pre-made materials ensure coverage. Your self-generated materials ensure depth.

The Effort Is the Point

The generation effect works precisely because generating information is harder than reading it. When students avoid creating their own study materials because it is "too much work" or "takes too long," they are avoiding the very effort that produces the strongest learning.

Yes, downloading a flashcard deck is faster than making your own. But if the creation process teaches you the material so effectively that you need fewer review sessions, the total time investment may actually be similar - with significantly better retention.

Your brain remembers what it works hard to produce far better than what it passively absorbs. Put that principle to work in your next study session.
