Most note-taking fails for a simple reason: people write things down and never interact with those notes again. The Cornell method, developed by Walter Pauk at Cornell University in the 1950s, solves this by building review directly into the note-taking structure.

The Layout
A Cornell note page is divided into three sections:
- The Note-Taking Column - the large right-hand section (about two-thirds of the page width). This is where you write your notes during a lecture, reading session, or video.

Use your own words. Transcribing word-for-word is a trap. It keeps your hands busy while your brain stays idle. Paraphrasing forces you to process information as you capture it.
Use abbreviations and shorthand. You are not writing a manuscript. Develop a personal shorthand that lets you keep up with the flow of information without falling behind.
Leave space between ideas. Do not pack your notes into a wall of text. White space between points makes the notes easier to scan and gives you room to add connections later.
Capture key concepts, not every detail. Focus on main ideas, supporting evidence, definitions, formulas, and anything the instructor emphasizes or repeats.
Note things you do not understand. Put a question mark next to confusing points. These become priorities during review.
After the Session: The Cue Column
This is where the Cornell method separates itself from ordinary note-taking. Within 24 hours of the session - ideally as soon as possible - go back and fill in the left column.
For each chunk of notes on the right, write a corresponding question, keyword, or cue on the left. These cues serve as retrieval prompts. When you cover the right column, the left column should give you enough to reconstruct the main ideas.
Good cues look like this:

Bad cues are vague labels like "muscles" or "economics stuff." The more specific your cues, the more useful they are for self-testing.
Writing these cues is itself a study session. You are reviewing the material, identifying the most important points, and reformulating them as questions - all of which strengthen your understanding and memory.
The Summary Section
After completing the cue column, write a brief summary at the bottom of the page. Two to four sentences covering the main ideas and their significance.
This summary forces you to step back from the details and identify the big picture. It also creates a quick-reference tool: when reviewing multiple pages of notes, you can read the summaries first to decide which pages need detailed review.
How to Review Cornell Notes
The review process is where most of the learning happens. Here is the protocol:
- Cover the right column. Use a piece of paper or fold the page so only the cue column is visible.
- Read each cue and try to recall the corresponding notes. Say the answer out loud or write it on a separate piece of paper.
- Uncover the right column and check your answers. Note what you got right, what you missed, and what you got partially right.
- Mark difficult items. Put a star or checkmark next to cues you struggled with. These need more review.

Writing cues that are too vague. "Chapter 5 stuff" is not a useful cue. Make your cues specific enough that they clearly point to a single concept or fact.
Skipping the summary. The summary is the fastest section to complete and one of the most valuable. Skipping it leaves out the synthesis step that ties everything together.
Never reviewing. The Cornell method is not magic. If you fill in the cue column and summary but never actually use them for self-testing, you are leaving most of the benefit on the table.
Trying to write everything down. The goal is to capture key ideas, not to create a transcript. Selective note-taking requires more cognitive effort, which is exactly why it produces better learning.
Digital vs. Paper
