A common mistake is only testing yourself on material you have already studied thoroughly. This leads to overconfidence on familiar topics and complete ignorance of the rest. Make sure your self-testing covers the full scope of what you need to know, including topics you feel less confident about.

Testing yourself on Tuesday on material you studied on Monday, then again on Thursday, and again the following week, produces far stronger long-term retention than testing yourself three times on Monday.
