# The Spacing Calculator: How to Time Your Reviews

You study a concept on Monday. By Friday, it is gone. You re-study it, and by the following Wednesday, you are back to square one. This cycle of learning and forgetting is frustrating, but it is also completely predictable - and that predictability is exactly what makes it solvable.

The science of review timing is one of the most well-established findings in cognitive psychology. Get the spacing right, and you can remember more while studying less. Get it wrong, and you are stuck on the hamster wheel of endless re-learning.

The Forgetting Curve Is Real

In 1885, German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus published his research on memory decay, establishing what we now call the forgetting curve. His findings - replicated hundreds of times since - show that without review, we lose roughly 50% of newly learned information within 24 hours. Within a week, retention drops to around 20 to 30%.

But Ebbinghaus also discovered something more useful: each time you successfully recall information at the right moment, the forgetting curve flattens. The memory becomes more durable, and the next review can be pushed further into the future.

This is the foundation of spaced repetition - the most evidence-backed study technique in cognitive science.

How Spacing Works

The basic principle is counterintuitive: you should review material at the point where you are about to forget it, not while it is still fresh. Reviewing too early wastes time because the memory is still strong. Reviewing too late means you are essentially relearning from scratch.

The sweet spot is right at the edge of forgetting - the moment when recall requires effort but is still achievable. This effortful retrieval is what strengthens the memory trace.

Research by Piotr Wozniak, the creator of the SuperMemo algorithm, formalized this into a mathematical model. While the exact intervals vary by individual and material complexity, the general pattern holds across studies.

A Practical Spacing Schedule

For most learners studying typical exam material, the following intervals provide a strong starting framework:

First review: 1 day after initial learning. This is the most critical review. Without it, you will lose the majority of what you learned. Even a brief 5-minute review session makes a significant difference.

Second review: 3 days after the first review. By now, you have recalled the material twice. The memory is starting to consolidate, but it is still fragile.

Third review: 7 days after the second review. At this point, about 10 days have passed since you first learned the material. If you can recall it here, the memory is becoming durable.

Fourth review: 14 days after the third review. You are now three to four weeks out from initial learning. Successful recall at this interval means the information is moving into long-term storage.

Fifth review: 30 days after the fourth review. This final review cements the material. After five successful recalls at expanding intervals, most people can retain the information for months.

Here is what that looks like mapped out:

  • Day 1: Learn new material
  • Day 2: First review
  • Day 5: Second review
  • Day 12: Third review
  • Day 26: Fourth review
  • Day 56: Fifth review

In about two months, with only five review sessions, you have moved information from fragile short-term memory to durable long-term storage. Compare that to the traditional approach of cramming the same material multiple times in a single week.

Adjusting Intervals Based on Difficulty

Not all material is equally difficult, and your spacing schedule should reflect that. Here is how to adjust:

Easy material (facts you almost know already): Expand the intervals. Skip the Day 2 review and start at Day 3. Push subsequent intervals out by 50%.

Moderate material (new concepts that make sense): Use the standard intervals above.

Difficult material (complex concepts, counterintuitive facts): Compress the intervals. Add an extra review at Day 1 (morning and evening). Keep the second review at Day 3 but add a third review at Day 5 before moving to the standard schedule.

Material you keep getting wrong: Reset the schedule. Treat it as newly learned material and start the spacing cycle over. There is no shame in this - it simply means the initial encoding was not strong enough.

The Role of Active Recall in Spacing

Spacing only works if your reviews involve active recall. Rereading your notes on schedule is not the same as testing yourself on schedule.

During each review session, you should be:

  • Attempting to recall the answer before looking at it
  • Writing out explanations from memory
  • Answering practice questions on the topic
  • Teaching the concept to someone (or to yourself)

If your review session involves opening your notes and reading through them, you are getting the spacing benefit but missing the retrieval benefit. You need both.

How to Track Your Reviews

Managing a spacing schedule across dozens or hundreds of concepts sounds overwhelming - and it is, if you try to do it manually. This is where systems matter.

The low-tech approach: Use a box system. Create flashcards and place them in numbered boxes. Box 1 gets reviewed daily, Box 2 every three days, Box 3 weekly, Box 4 biweekly, Box 5 monthly. When you get a card right, it moves to the next box. Get it wrong, and it goes back to Box 1. This is the Leitner system, and it has been used successfully for decades.

The digital approach: Spaced repetition software automates the scheduling entirely. Algorithms track your performance on each item and calculate the optimal next review date. You just show up and answer - the system handles the timing.

The digital approach is dramatically more efficient because it adjusts intervals based on your actual performance, not a one-size-fits-all schedule. It also scales effortlessly to hundreds or thousands of items.

Common Spacing Mistakes

Reviewing too frequently. If you are reviewing material you already know well on a daily basis, you are wasting time. The whole point of spacing is to push intervals outward as mastery increases.

Ignoring the hard stuff. It is tempting to review the material you know well (it feels good to get things right) and avoid the material that trips you up. But the material you struggle with needs more frequent review, not less.

Cramming before the exam anyway. Many people use spaced repetition during their study period and then cram the night before the exam. This undermines the entire system. If you have been spacing correctly, you should be able to walk into your exam after a light review the day before, not an all-night session.

Starting too late. Spaced repetition needs time to work. If your exam is in two weeks, you do not have enough runway for a full spacing cycle. Start early - the earlier you begin, the more effective spacing becomes.

The Math of Spacing

Consider two students studying 100 concepts for an exam eight weeks away.

Student A uses massed practice (traditional studying). She reviews all 100 concepts three times each week, spending about 10 hours per week on review. Total study time: 80 hours. Retention on exam day: roughly 40 to 60%.

Student B uses spaced repetition. She reviews each concept five times over the eight weeks at expanding intervals, spending about 5 hours per week. Total study time: 40 hours. Retention on exam day: roughly 80 to 90%.

Student B studied half as much and remembered twice as much. This is not hypothetical - these numbers align with decades of research on the spacing effect, including a comprehensive meta-analysis published in *Psychological Bulletin* by Cepeda and colleagues.

Making Spacing Work for You

The science is clear: spacing your reviews at expanding intervals is one of the most powerful things you can do for your learning. But knowing the science is not enough. You need a system that makes it easy to implement.
