Why Practice Testing Outperforms Concept Mapping
If you had one hour to study and had to choose between creating a detailed concept map and taking a practice test, which would you pick? Most students would choose the concept map. It feels more thorough, more organized, and more intellectually satisfying. You end up with a beautiful visual representation of the material that seems to demonstrate deep understanding.
But the research is clear: practice testing produces significantly better long-term retention than concept mapping. This finding has important implications for how you should allocate your study time - and it challenges some widely held assumptions about what makes studying effective.
The Head-to-Head Comparison
The most direct comparison of these two strategies comes from a landmark study by Karpicke and Blunt (2011), published in Science. In their experiment, students studied a passage about a scientific topic using one of four methods: a single study session, repeated study, elaborative concept mapping, or retrieval practice (practice testing).
One week later, the retrieval practice group significantly outperformed all other groups on a final test - including the concept mapping group. This was true even on test questions that required students to make inferences and draw connections between concepts, the very type of thinking that concept mapping is supposed to promote.
The result was striking because concept mapping is not a passive strategy. It requires active engagement with the material, identification of key concepts, and articulation of relationships between ideas. By any reasonable analysis, it should produce strong learning. And it does - just not as strong as the learning produced by practice testing.
Why Retrieval Beats Elaboration
Understanding why practice testing outperforms concept mapping requires understanding what makes memories durable and accessible.
Concept mapping is a form of elaborative encoding. You take information and process it deeply by organizing it, connecting it, and restructuring it. This creates a rich, well-organized representation in memory. The problem is that elaboration primarily strengthens the storage of information. It does not necessarily strengthen your ability to retrieve that information later when you need it.
Practice testing, on the other hand, directly exercises the retrieval process itself. When you attempt to recall information from memory, you strengthen the neural pathways that lead to that information. Bjork and Bjork (1992) described this distinction using the concepts of storage strength and retrieval strength. Elaborative strategies like concept mapping build storage strength. Retrieval practice builds retrieval strength. And retrieval strength is what determines whether you can actually access the information when you need it.
Think of it this way: concept mapping is like carefully organizing books in a library. Practice testing is like repeatedly navigating the library to find specific books. Both activities are useful, but the navigation practice is what ensures you can actually find what you need.
The Testing Effect Is Robust
The superiority of practice testing over other study methods is not a fragile finding limited to specific conditions. It has been replicated extensively across different materials, different populations, and different testing formats.
Roediger and Karpicke (2006) demonstrated the testing effect across multiple experiments using prose passages. Students who practiced retrieval consistently outperformed students who spent the same time restudying. Critically, the advantage of practice testing grew larger as the retention interval increased. On an immediate test, the groups performed similarly. But after two days or a week, the practice testing group retained significantly more.
Dunlosky et al. (2013) conducted a comprehensive review of ten common study strategies and rated practice testing as one of only two techniques with "high utility" - meaning strong evidence of effectiveness across a wide range of conditions. Concept mapping, while considered useful, did not receive the same rating.
What About Deep Understanding?
A common objection to prioritizing practice testing over concept mapping is that retrieval practice might only improve rote recall without promoting deeper understanding. The Karpicke and Blunt (2011) study addressed this directly.
In their experiment, the final test included both verbatim questions (testing direct recall of stated facts) and inference questions (requiring students to integrate and apply concepts in new ways). The retrieval practice group outperformed the concept mapping group on both types of questions.
This finding challenges the assumption that you need elaborative activities to build deep understanding. Retrieval practice does not just strengthen isolated facts - it strengthens the entire network of associations connected to the retrieved information. When you successfully recall a concept, you also activate and reinforce the related concepts, examples, and connections linked to it in memory.
Butler (2010) further demonstrated that retrieval practice improved transfer - the ability to apply learned concepts to new situations. Students who practiced retrieval were better able to use their knowledge flexibly in novel contexts, a hallmark of genuine understanding.
When Concept Mapping Still Has Value
None of this means concept mapping is useless. It remains a valuable tool in specific situations.
Concept mapping is excellent for the initial organization of complex material. When you are first encountering a new topic and need to understand how its components relate to each other, creating a concept map can help you build a coherent mental framework. This framework then makes subsequent retrieval practice more effective because you have something organized to retrieve.
Concept mapping is also useful as a diagnostic tool. Creating a concept map from memory (without looking at your notes) is actually a form of retrieval practice - and the gaps and errors in your map reveal exactly what you do not yet understand.
The problem arises when students use concept mapping as their primary study strategy - spending hours creating elaborate, color-coded maps as a substitute for testing themselves on the material.
How to Use Practice Testing Effectively
If you are convinced to prioritize practice testing, here is how to do it well.
Test Yourself Without Aids
The key ingredient is genuine retrieval effort. Looking at a concept map you already created and nodding along is not practice testing. Closing your notes and trying to write down everything you remember about a topic is. The difficulty of the retrieval attempt is what drives the learning benefit.
Use Free Recall First
Before turning to structured questions, try free recall: put away all materials and write down everything you can remember about the topic you just studied. This unstructured retrieval activates a wide network of associations and reveals gaps you might not know you have.
Include Application Questions
Do not limit yourself to factual recall questions. Include questions that require you to apply concepts to new situations, compare and contrast ideas, or explain causal mechanisms. These higher-order questions produce retrieval practice for both the specific concepts and the connections between them.
Space Your Tests
A single practice test is good. Multiple practice tests spaced across days and weeks are dramatically better. Each spaced retrieval attempt strengthens the memory further and extends the interval before the next review is needed.
Review After Testing
Practice testing is most effective when followed by feedback. After attempting to recall information, check your answers against your materials. Correct errors. Fill in gaps. This feedback ensures that retrieval practice strengthens accurate memories rather than reinforcing mistakes.
The Optimal Approach: Combine Both
The most effective study approach is not an either-or choice between practice testing and concept mapping. It is a strategic combination where each method plays to its strength.
Use concept mapping early in the learning process to organize new material and build a coherent mental framework. Then shift to practice testing as your primary study method to build durable, accessible memories of that material. Periodically revisit your concept maps from memory as a form of retrieval practice, updating and correcting them based on what you can and cannot recall.
This combination gives you the organizational benefits of concept mapping and the retention benefits of practice testing. But if you have to choose one - and time constraints often force that choice - choose retrieval practice. The research is unambiguous on this point.
Put Retrieval First
The next time you sit down to study, resist the urge to create elaborate notes, diagrams, or maps as your primary activity. Instead, close your materials and test yourself. Write what you remember. Answer practice questions. Explain concepts from memory. It will feel harder and less productive than building a beautiful concept map. But the learning it produces will be deeper, more durable, and more useful when it matters.
