Strategy 6: Give Yourself More Time - and Use It Differently

Dyslexic learners typically need more time to process written material. This is not a weakness to fight against - it is a reality to plan around.

  • Start studying earlier. Spread your study sessions over more days so that each session can be shorter and less reading-intensive.
  • Use spaced repetition. Reviewing material across multiple sessions with increasing intervals between them builds stronger long-term memory than a single extended session. This approach also means each individual session involves less reading.
  • Schedule buffer time. If a reading assignment typically takes your classmates an hour, plan for ninety minutes or two hours. Removing time pressure reduces stress, which in turn improves comprehension.
