# How to Study Definitions and Key Terms

Every course has its vocabulary. Biology has organelles and processes. Psychology has disorders and theories. Law has doctrines and precedents. Economics has models and indicators. Before you can think critically about any subject, you need to speak its language - and that means learning definitions.

Most students approach definitions the same way: read the definition, repeat it a few times, move on. This works poorly. Rote repetition of exact wording produces fragile memories that crack under the pressure of exam questions phrased differently from the textbook.

Effective definition study goes beyond memorizing words. It builds genuine understanding of what each term means, why it matters, and how it connects to the broader subject.

Why Rote Memorization of Definitions Fails

When you memorize a definition word for word, you are storing a string of text rather than a concept. This creates two problems.

First, verbatim memorization is highly susceptible to interference. If you memorize twenty definitions word for word, the similar phrasing patterns blend together and become confusing. Was "the process by which" part of the definition of osmosis or diffusion? When definitions share similar language patterns, verbatim memory becomes unreliable.

Second, word-for-word memorization does not transfer to application. Exam questions rarely ask you to recite a definition exactly as it appears in the textbook. They ask you to identify examples, distinguish between similar concepts, or apply the concept to a novel situation. If all you have stored is the exact textbook wording, you lack the flexible understanding needed for these tasks.

Research by Craik and Lockhart (1972) on levels of processing demonstrated that deeper engagement with material produces stronger memories. Simply reading and repeating a definition is shallow processing. Understanding what the term means, generating your own examples, and connecting it to other concepts is deep processing.

Strategies for Learning Definitions Effectively

Write Definitions in Your Own Words

After reading the textbook definition, close the book and write the definition in your own language. Do not try to replicate the original wording. Instead, explain the concept as if you were describing it to someone who has never heard of it.

If you cannot restate the definition without looking at it, you have identified a gap in your understanding - not just your memory. Go back and study the concept more deeply before trying again.

Compare your version to the original definition afterward. Are you capturing the essential meaning? Did you miss any critical qualifications or distinctions? This comparison process highlights exactly what you need to focus on.

Use the Keyword Method

The keyword method, researched extensively by Atkinson and Raugh (1975), involves creating a vivid mental image that links a term to its meaning through an intermediary keyword.

Here is how it works:

  1. Find a word or phrase that sounds like the term you need to learn (the keyword).
  2. Create a vivid mental image connecting the keyword to the definition.

For example, to remember that "mitosis" means cell division, you might use "my toes" as a keyword and imagine your toes splitting apart into separate copies. The auditory link between "mitosis" and "my toes" provides a retrieval cue, and the visual image connects to the meaning.

This method is particularly effective for terms that have no intuitive connection to their meanings.

Create Contrast Sets

Many study errors occur not because students cannot define a term, but because they confuse it with a related term. Osmosis and diffusion. Mitosis and meiosis. Classical and operant conditioning. Affect and effect.

Instead of studying each term in isolation, study confusable terms together and focus explicitly on what makes them different. Create a two-column comparison: Term A on the left, Term B on the right, with the distinguishing features highlighted.

Ask yourself: What does Term A include that Term B does not? In what situations would you use one but not the other? What is the critical boundary between them?

This contrastive approach builds the discrimination ability you need for exam questions that test whether you truly understand each concept or just have a vague sense of what it means.

Generate Examples and Non-Examples

For each definition, generate at least two examples (things the term applies to) and two non-examples (things that seem similar but do not qualify). This forces you to understand the boundaries of the concept.

If you are learning the definition of "reinforcement" in psychology, you might generate examples (giving a dog a treat after it sits, praising a student after they answer correctly) and non-examples (punishing a child for misbehavior, which is punishment not reinforcement, or giving a treat randomly, which is not contingent on behavior).

Research by Tennyson and Cocchiarella (1986) demonstrated that studying with both examples and non-examples produced significantly better concept acquisition than studying with examples alone.

Use Flashcards Strategically

Flashcards work well for definitions, but how you use them matters enormously. Follow these guidelines:

Put the term on the front and a question on the back, not just the definition. Instead of "Osmosis - the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration," try "What is osmosis? Explain it and give an example." This forces active recall and deeper processing.

Shuffle your cards regularly. Studying flashcards in the same order every time can lead to serial position effects where you remember terms by their position in the sequence rather than by their meaning.

Use spaced repetition. Review cards you find difficult more frequently and cards you know well less frequently. Move mastered cards to a "review weekly" pile rather than continuing to drill them every session.

Include application questions. Add cards that do not just ask for definitions but ask you to apply them. "Is this scenario an example of osmosis or diffusion?" forces you to use the definition rather than just recite it.

Build a Concept Web

Definitions do not exist in isolation. Every term is connected to other terms in the subject. Building a visual concept web - where you draw connections between related terms - helps you see how the vocabulary fits together.

Put a central concept in the middle and branch outward to related terms. Draw lines between terms that relate to each other and label the connections. This exercise forces you to think about relationships rather than isolated definitions, which produces the kind of integrated understanding that exams test.

Testing Your Knowledge

The most important step in studying definitions is testing yourself honestly. Here is a simple but effective method.

Write each term on a separate piece of paper or card. Shuffle them. For each term, try to do three things from memory:

  1. Define it in your own words
  2. Give an example
  3. Explain how it differs from one related term

If you can do all three, you know the term well. If you struggle with any of them, you have identified exactly what needs more work. This approach is far more diagnostic than simply reading through a list of definitions and checking whether they look familiar.

Studying definitions is not glamorous, and no amount of clever technique makes it exciting. But mastering the vocabulary of your subject is foundational. When you truly understand your key terms - not just recognize them, but can define, exemplify, distinguish, and apply them - everything else in the course becomes easier to learn.
