Every student has heard this advice: "Go with your first instinct. Don't change your answers." Teachers say it. Parents say it. Test prep books say it. And for decades, students have followed this advice - often to their detriment.
The belief that your first answer is usually correct is one of the most persistent myths in education. Research tells a different, more nuanced story.
The First Instinct Fallacy
The idea that first answers are best has been studied extensively, and the research consistently points in the opposite direction. A comprehensive review by Kruger, Wirtz, and Miller (2005) examined this phenomenon across multiple studies and found that answer changes go from wrong to right about twice as often as they go from right to wrong.
Read that again. When students change their answers, they improve their scores more often than they hurt them.
So why does everyone believe the opposite? The answer lies in a cognitive bias called the counterfactual thinking asymmetry. When you change an answer from right to wrong, you experience sharp, memorable regret. You had the right answer and gave it away. This feels terrible and sticks in your memory.
When you change an answer from wrong to right, you experience mild relief. You dodged a bullet. This positive outcome is less emotionally intense and fades from memory more quickly.
Over time, the painful memories of right-to-wrong changes accumulate while the pleasant memories of wrong-to-right changes fade. The result is a biased impression that changing answers usually hurts you, even though the data shows the opposite.
What the Research Actually Shows
The evidence on answer changing is remarkably consistent across studies spanning decades.
A classic study by Benjamin, Cavell, and Shallenberger (1984) analyzed actual erasure marks on student exams - a method that removed self-report bias entirely. They found that 57.8% of changes were from wrong to right, while only 19.5% were from right to wrong. The remaining changes were from one wrong answer to another.
More recent studies have replicated these findings across different exam types, student populations, and academic subjects. The pattern is robust: changing answers is, on average, beneficial.
However, "on average" is doing important work in that sentence. The benefit of answer changing is not uniform across all situations.
When You Should Change Your Answer
Answer changing tends to be beneficial in specific circumstances.
When you have a concrete reason to change. If you re-read the question and notice you misunderstood what was being asked, change your answer. If you recall a specific fact or principle that contradicts your initial response, change it. If you realize you made a calculation error, fix it.
The key word is "concrete." You should be able to articulate why the new answer is better. "I just feel uncertain" is not a reason to change. "I misread 'not' in the question stem" is.
When you identify a pattern in the question. Sometimes reviewing other questions on the test triggers relevant knowledge. If question 34 reminds you of a concept that changes your thinking about question 12, go back and reconsider your answer on question 12.
When you were guessing initially. If your first answer was a pure guess - you had no basis for choosing it - then any subsequent reasoning that favors a different answer is worth acting on. A guess has no special claim to accuracy.
When You Should Keep Your First Answer
There are also clear situations where sticking with your initial response is the better strategy.
When the urge to change is driven by anxiety rather than reasoning. Test anxiety can make every answer feel wrong. If you are second-guessing yourself because you feel panicky rather than because you have identified a specific error, trust your preparation and keep your original answer.
When you cannot articulate why the alternative is better. Vague discomfort is not a valid reason to change. If you are drawn to a different option but cannot explain why, stay with your first response.
When you are running low on time. Changing answers thoughtfully requires reading the question carefully, reconsidering each option, and making a deliberate choice. If you are rushing, the quality of your reconsideration drops and the probability of changing from right to wrong increases.
A Better Framework: The Two-Pass Method
Instead of worrying about whether to change answers, use a structured approach that reduces the problem entirely.
First pass: Work through the entire exam, answering every question you can with reasonable confidence. For questions where you are unsure, choose your best answer and mark the question for review. Do not agonize - make a decision and move on.
Second pass: Return to marked questions with fresh eyes. For each one, re-read the question carefully, reconsider the options, and decide whether your original answer holds up. If you have a concrete reason to change, change it. If not, keep your original response.
This method gives you the benefit of answer changing (catching misreads, applying knowledge gained from later questions) while protecting you from anxiety-driven second-guessing. The marking system ensures you only reconsider questions where reconsideration is warranted.
The Meta-Skill: Monitoring Your Own Reasoning
The real lesson from the answer-changing research is not about a simple rule. It is about the quality of your reasoning in the moment.
High-performing students are better at distinguishing between productive reconsideration and anxious second-guessing. They know the difference between "I have new information that changes my analysis" and "I am nervous and everything feels wrong."
This metacognitive skill - monitoring the quality of your own thinking - can be developed through practice. When you study with practice exams, pay attention to the instances where you consider changing an answer. Note whether the change was driven by reasoning or anxiety, and check whether it was correct.
Over time, you will build a reliable internal signal for when changing is worthwhile and when it is not. This is far more valuable than any blanket rule about first instincts.
The Bottom Line
Your first answer is not sacred. It is a response produced under specific conditions - the amount of time you spent, the information you accessed, the way you read the question. If those conditions change during the exam (you notice a misread, recall new information, or recognize a pattern), updating your answer is rational and statistically beneficial.
The advice to "never change your answer" is well-intentioned but wrong. The better advice is to change your answer when you have a reason, and keep it when you do not.
Trust your reasoning, not your instinct. They are not always the same thing.
