# How to Design Your Own Practice Exams
Practice testing is one of the highest-rated study strategies in cognitive science. Dunlosky et al. (2013) ranked it alongside distributed practice as having the strongest evidence for improving learning outcomes. But there is a practical problem: for many subjects, good practice exams are hard to find.
The solution is to build your own. And as it turns out, the process of creating practice questions is itself a powerful form of studying.
Why Making Your Own Tests Works
Writing practice questions forces you to think about material from the perspective of someone designing an assessment. This is a fundamentally different cognitive task than reading or reviewing notes, and it engages your brain at a much deeper level.
When you write a question, you must identify what is important enough to test, consider what common misconceptions exist, and figure out how to phrase the question clearly. This requires genuine understanding of the material - you cannot write a good question about something you do not understand.
Research supports this approach. A study by Foos, Mora, and Tkacz (1994) found that students who generated their own test questions performed better on subsequent exams than students who simply reviewed the material. The act of question generation promotes elaborative processing, organization of knowledge, and identification of key concepts.
Step 1: Identify What to Test
Before writing questions, you need to determine what your exam should cover. Start by gathering your source materials:
- Course syllabi and learning objectives
- Lecture notes and slides
- Textbook chapter summaries
- Any study guides provided by your instructor
- Previous assignments and their feedback
Review these sources and identify the major themes, concepts, and skills. Pay special attention to learning objectives if they are available - these tell you explicitly what you are expected to know.
Create a topic list organized by priority. High-priority topics are those emphasized repeatedly across multiple sources, and those your instructor has flagged as important. Lower-priority topics might appear only once or be presented as supplementary material.
Step 2: Choose Question Formats
Different types of questions test different cognitive skills. A well-designed practice exam uses a mix.
Multiple choice questions test recognition, discrimination between similar concepts, and the ability to identify correct applications. They are particularly good for testing factual knowledge and common misconceptions.
Short answer questions test recall - your ability to produce information from memory without cues. They are harder than multiple choice and more closely simulate the retrieval demands of many real exams.
Application problems test whether you can use concepts in new situations. These are especially valuable for subjects that emphasize problem-solving, such as math, science, and engineering.
Essay or explanation questions test deep understanding - your ability to organize, synthesize, and communicate knowledge. Even if your actual exam will not include essays, practicing this format strengthens your grasp of the material.
Match your question formats to the actual exam you are preparing for. If your exam is entirely multiple choice, weight your practice exam toward that format. But include some higher-order questions regardless, because the deeper processing they require will improve your performance even on recognition-based tests.
Step 3: Write Questions at Multiple Difficulty Levels
A common mistake in DIY practice exams is writing only easy, factual questions. These are useful for confirming basic knowledge, but they do not prepare you for the challenging questions that differentiate strong performances from average ones.
Use Bloom's Taxonomy as a guide to vary difficulty:
- Remember: "What is the definition of X?"
- Understand: "Explain why X occurs."
- Apply: "Given this scenario, how would X apply?"
- Analyze: "Compare and contrast X and Y."
- Evaluate: "Which approach would be most effective for this situation, and why?"
- Create: "Design a solution to this problem using the principles discussed."
Aim for roughly 30% recall-level questions, 40% application-level questions, and 30% analysis or evaluation questions. This distribution ensures you are preparing for the full range of what you might face.
Step 4: Write Strong Distractors for Multiple Choice
If you are writing multiple choice questions, the quality of your wrong answers matters as much as the correct answer. Weak distractors - obviously wrong options - reduce the value of the question because you can get it right without truly understanding the material.
Good distractors are answers that would seem plausible to someone with an incomplete understanding. They often reflect common misconceptions, partial knowledge, or errors in reasoning.
For example, if the correct answer involves a specific mechanism, your distractors might include related mechanisms that are commonly confused with it, or descriptions that are partially correct but contain a critical error.
If you struggle to write good distractors, that often reveals that you understand the concept well enough to distinguish it from superficially similar ideas - which is itself a sign of strong learning.
Step 5: Create an Answer Key With Explanations
An answer key alone is not enough. For each question, write a brief explanation of why the correct answer is right and - for multiple choice questions - why each distractor is wrong.
This step serves two purposes. First, it deepens your understanding during the creation process. Second, it provides valuable feedback when you take the exam later. Research on the testing effect consistently shows that tests are most beneficial when followed by detailed feedback.
Step 6: Add Timing Constraints
Real exams have time pressure, and practicing under similar conditions prepares you for that experience. Estimate how long your actual exam will allow per question, and set that as your benchmark.
For a typical 60-question, 90-minute exam, you have roughly 90 seconds per question. Set a timer when you take your practice exam and track whether you finish on time. If you consistently run over, practice working more quickly on straightforward questions so you can save time for harder ones.
Step 7: Take the Exam Under Realistic Conditions
After creating your practice exam, wait at least a day before taking it. This delay is important - if you take it immediately after writing the questions, you will remember the answers from the creation process, which defeats the purpose of testing your long-term retention.
When you do take it, simulate real conditions as closely as possible:
- Sit at a desk with minimal distractions
- Put away your notes and textbook
- Set a timer
- Do not check answers until you have completed the entire exam
After finishing, grade yourself using your answer key. Pay careful attention to which questions you missed and why. These errors should directly inform your next study session.
Turning Question Creation Into a Habit
You do not need to create an entire exam in one sitting. A more sustainable approach is to write a few questions after each study session. Over the course of a week or two, you accumulate a substantial question bank that covers all the material.
You can also trade practice exams with study partners. Creating questions tests your understanding, and answering someone else's questions tests your knowledge from a different angle. Both activities produce significant learning benefits.
The practice of designing your own exams puts you in control of your preparation. Instead of hoping that available practice materials cover the right content, you ensure they do - and you learn deeply in the process.
