Most students assume that anxiety is the enemy of performance. The logic seems straightforward: anxiety makes you feel bad, feeling bad makes you perform badly, therefore less anxiety equals better performance.
This is wrong. Or rather, it is incomplete in a way that leads students to counterproductive strategies. The real relationship between anxiety and performance is not linear - it is curvilinear. Some anxiety actually improves performance. Too little anxiety and too much anxiety both impair it. The goal is not to eliminate anxiety but to calibrate it.
Understanding this relationship changes how you prepare for exams, how you interpret your anxiety symptoms, and how you perform on test day.
The Yerkes-Dodson Law
In 1908, psychologists Robert Yerkes and John Dodson published research demonstrating that the relationship between arousal (which includes anxiety) and performance follows an inverted U-shaped curve. At low levels of arousal, performance is poor because you lack motivation and alertness. At moderate levels, performance peaks because you are engaged, focused, and motivated. At high levels, performance declines again because excessive arousal impairs working memory, disrupts retrieval, and triggers avoidance behaviors.
This relationship - now known as the Yerkes-Dodson law - has been replicated across more than a century of research in cognitive psychology, sports psychology, and educational science. It is one of the most robust findings in the study of human performance.
The practical implication is that the optimal state for exam performance is not calm relaxation. It is a moderate level of arousal characterized by alertness, engagement, and a sense of challenge - what many people would describe as "being keyed up" or "feeling the pressure."
Why Some Anxiety Helps
Moderate anxiety improves performance through several mechanisms:
Attention and focus. Mild anxiety narrows your attention to the task at hand. On an exam, this means fewer distracting thoughts and greater concentration on the questions in front of you. Research by Eysenck, Derakshan, Santos, and Calvo (2007) in their attentional control theory describes how moderate anxiety increases effort and processing resources directed at the task.
Motivation and effort. When you care about the outcome - when there is something at stake - you try harder. A student who feels no anxiety about an exam has no particular reason to exert maximum effort. A student who feels moderate anxiety brings additional cognitive resources to bear because the situation feels important.
Memory consolidation. Moderate stress hormones, including cortisol and norepinephrine, actually enhance memory formation and retrieval - up to a point. Research by Lupien, Maheu, Tu, Fiocco, and Schramek (2007) demonstrates that moderate cortisol levels enhance hippocampal function, while very high levels impair it.
Alertness. The physiological components of anxiety - elevated heart rate, increased blood flow, heightened sensory awareness - prepare your body and brain for optimal performance. These are the same responses that athletes experience before competition, and they serve a similar function.
When Anxiety Becomes Harmful
The transition from helpful to harmful anxiety is not a sharp line - it is a gradual shift that varies by individual and by task. But there are clear signs that anxiety has crossed from facilitative to debilitative:
Working memory overload. Excessive anxiety generates intrusive thoughts - worries about failure, self-critical narratives, catastrophic predictions - that consume working memory capacity. Since working memory is essential for reading comprehension, problem-solving, and reasoning, these intrusive thoughts directly compete with the cognitive processes the exam requires. Beilock and Carr (2005) demonstrated this mechanism specifically in the context of high-stakes testing.
Retrieval interference. High anxiety can block access to information you actually know. The tip-of-the-tongue experience - knowing that you know something but being unable to retrieve it - becomes more frequent under excessive stress. This is particularly frustrating because the knowledge is there; the retrieval pathway is temporarily impaired.
Decision paralysis. When anxiety is very high, students may freeze on questions, unable to commit to an answer. They reread questions without processing them, change answers repeatedly, or spend disproportionate time on individual questions.
Physical symptoms. Nausea, headaches, rapid breathing, trembling, and gastrointestinal distress all accompany extreme anxiety. These symptoms are distracting in themselves and can further escalate anxiety through a feedback loop.
Finding Your Optimal Zone
The optimal anxiety level varies by person and by task complexity. The Yerkes-Dodson law includes an important nuance: for simple or well-practiced tasks, higher arousal levels are optimal. For complex or novel tasks, lower arousal levels are optimal.
This has direct implications for exam preparation. For material you have thoroughly mastered and practiced extensively, a higher level of arousal may enhance your performance. For material that requires complex reasoning or that you have not studied as deeply, you need to be in a calmer state to perform well.
Since most exams include both familiar and challenging questions, the practical target is a moderate level of activation - enough to be alert and engaged, not so much that your thinking becomes rigid or your working memory is consumed by worry.
Strategies for Calibrating Your Anxiety
Reappraisal, not suppression. Trying to suppress anxiety typically makes it worse. A more effective approach is cognitive reappraisal - interpreting your anxiety symptoms differently. Research by Jamieson, Mendes, Blackstock, and Schmader (2010) found that students who were instructed to reinterpret their anxiety as excitement or readiness performed significantly better on a standardized test than those who tried to stay calm.
When your heart races before an exam, instead of thinking "I am anxious, this is bad," try thinking "My body is preparing for peak performance." The physiological state is the same. The cognitive interpretation changes its effect.
Thorough preparation. The most effective anxiety management strategy is legitimate preparation. When you have studied effectively using evidence-based methods, you have an objective basis for confidence. This does not eliminate anxiety, but it prevents anxiety from spiraling into panic because you have concrete evidence that you are prepared.
Exposure and desensitization. Taking full-length practice exams under realistic conditions reduces test-day anxiety by making the experience familiar. The first practice test might trigger high anxiety. By the fourth or fifth, the testing situation itself is no longer novel, which brings arousal closer to the optimal zone.
Physical regulation. When anxiety exceeds the optimal zone, physical techniques can bring it down quickly. Slow diaphragmatic breathing (4-count inhale, 4-count hold, 6-count exhale) activates the parasympathetic nervous system and reduces physiological arousal within minutes. Progressive muscle relaxation works through a similar mechanism.
Pre-exam routine. Develop a consistent pre-exam routine that includes light physical activity, controlled breathing, and a brief review of your strongest material. Reviewing material you know well before the exam primes your confidence and starts the test from a psychologically strong position.
The Anxiety-Performance Relationship During Studying
The Yerkes-Dodson curve applies to study sessions as well, not just exam day. Study sessions with zero stakes produce minimal engagement and shallow processing. Study sessions with moderate stakes - a self-imposed deadline, a commitment to complete a practice test, or accountability to a study partner - produce better focus and retention.
This is one reason why practice tests are so effective: they create a moderate level of performance pressure that enhances encoding. Casually reading through practice questions without attempting to answer them seriously produces far less learning than treating them as a real test.
Working With Anxiety, Not Against It
The students who perform best on high-stakes exams are not the ones who feel no anxiety. They are the ones who experience moderate anxiety, interpret it as a signal of readiness rather than danger, and channel the additional arousal into focused effort.
Anxiety is not your enemy. It is a tool. The goal is learning to calibrate it - and that starts with understanding that the relationship between anxiety and performance is not a line going down but a curve with a peak in the middle.
